Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge

Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge   – Day Trips –

Cano Negro, known for its bird watching is approximately a 2-hour (4×4) drive from the Lodge. Hundreds of thousands of migratory waterfowl flock here every year providing some of the best bird watching in the country. You will be amazed by the array of roseate spoonbills, limpkins, cattle egrets, white ibis, wood stork, whistling ducks, and much more. Many reptiles such as turtles and caimans line the banks as boat tours operate along the Río Frío, a slow flowing river that winds through canyons on its way to the Cano Negro Lake. Boats are the only way to access the Refuge. Keep a look out for howler, spider and white-faced monkeys and three toed sloths that inhabit the area. Cano Negro is also a prime fishing site for tarpon, guapote, alligator gar, drum and bass when in season. A license from the ranger station in Cano Negro village is required.
