From Highway #1 (Pan American Highway) & Hwy #6 (Upala) Junction
(Approximately 40 km’s South of Liberia and 10 km’s North of Canas)
Head towards Upala on Hwy #6. After 22mi (35 km) you will reach the town of Bijagua, a good place to do last minute shopping for alcohol or to withdraw cash for payment at the Lodge. Continue through the town of Bijagua on Highway #6 following the well-posted “La Carolina Lodge” signs. After 3.75 mi (6 km) beyond Bijagua, turn right at the “La Carolina Lodge” sign. Follow the paved road for 3.75 mi (6 km) to the town of San Miguel. Continue to follow the signs to La Carolina Lodge, which is now only 0.62 mi (1 km) away. Welcome to “Pure Costa Rica”.
From Liberia International Airport (LIR) to Highway #1& Hwy #6 Junction
On exiting Liberia International Airport, turn left toward Liberia on Highway #21. After 10 mi (16 km), in Liberia downtown, turn right on Highway #1 (Pan American Highway). Continue 25 mi (40 km) to the Highway #1 (Pan American Highway) & Hwy #6 (Upala) Junction. Continue as per above directions.
From Canas to Highway #1& Hwy #6 Junction
From Canas travel app 6.21 mi (10 km) on Hwy #1 (Pan American Highway) and continue on Highway #1 (Pan American Highway) to the Hwy #6 (Upala) Junction. This Junction is 0.6 mi (1 km) past the “Restaurant Rio Corobici,” located on the Corobici river, just north of Canas. Continue as per above directions.
From Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna
Drive towards San Rafael de Guatuso. Take Hwy #4 towards Upala, after app. 14 km you will reach the village of Katira. You will see signs for the National Park Tenorio. Take a left turn on the road and follow the signs until the park. Pass the park for another 2 km and you will find our sign indicating a right turn on the unpaved road. Follow this road for 5 km and take a right hand turn in the village of San Miguel. Continue 1 km and you will see our entrance. Welcome to “Pure Costa Rica”.
Driving TIMES by Car
- Liberia International Airport: 1½ hrs
- La Fortuna (Arenal Volcano): 1½- 2 hrs
- San Jose International Airport: 4 hrs
- Tamarindo or Flamingo Beaches (Scenic drive): 2½ – 3 hrs
- Bijagua (Bank, gas station, supermarkets & restaurants): 25 minutes (12 km / 7.4 mi)
- San Miguel (Local cantina with snacks, ice & beer): 1 km (<0.75 mi)
BY BUS (from CANAS) & TAXI (from BIJAUGA)
An excellent bus service (five times daily) runs from Canas towards Upala, Exit in Bijagua. Usually a few Taxi’s are at the bus stop. If not, walk to the “Mega Super” Supermarket where they will contact a taxi for you.
RENTING A CAR
The easiest way to explore Costa Rica is to rent a car. There are many rental car agencies near Liberia Airport (LIR), we recommend Adobe. Please ask for our contact person.
LIBERIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (LIR) – Preferred
Based on its distance from La Carolina Lodge, as well as uncongested location, this is definitely the preferred airport. If you do not wish to rent a car notice, airport transfers can be arranged. Advanced notice is required. A reliable taxi (4×4), which can accommodate up to 3-4 people, costs approximately $145.00 one way. Taxi for more then 3-4 people can be arranged. Ask for rates.
